Porter Band - "Helicopters", 1980

If you ask a Pole born between circa 1965 and 1970 about when, why and how they got into rawk music, chances are they'll point at this record. John Porter was/is a Welshman, who in the mid-70s came to Poland by accident and, captivated by the beauty of Polish ladies, decided to settle here for good. Soon he became part of the freak/hippie scene, yet near the end of the decade he headed towards something new and joined forces with a duo of future-minded psychedelic veterans - guitarist Mrozek (who by that time had even played with Nina Hagen) and bassist Cwynar. The band's first album is a cornerstone of Polish music. Sure, there'd been some stellar music made here, like Niemen, Anawa/Marek Grechuta or SBB, but this was a blow of fresh air. Pure rock oxygen. Think Television meets Neil Young, but so fucking catchy I just can't tell you, and the guy's such a great singer. "Refill"'s a bloody killer, "Newyorkicity" is a bloody killer, and "Life"...just ahhh...beautiful. An unsung masterpiece gets to light: here, or even better here, or get FLACs here and here, or maybe just buy the goddamn album (1 euro = about 4 Polish zloty).

Swans - "The Burning World", 1989

When was the last time you were listening to a song on off for a couple of days? It happened - and still is sort of happening - to me last week with "God Damn The Sun", the last track off it. Regardless of the fact I've known every second of it for 21 years. Mr. Gira may be disowning&disparaging this record, but it's one fuckin' great album, methinks.

Świetlicki Trzaska - "Cierpienie i wypoczynek", 1999

41 minut.

"Suffering And Relaxing", the only longplayer from an unlikely pair: Marcin Swietlicki, rock singer and at the same time Poland's most acclaimed poet of his generation, and Mikolaj Trzaska, visual artist by training and free jazz saxophonist by trade. Now that Trzaska has become a world class player, his busy schedule prevents him from making any more of this. Nothing to be ashamed of, though.

FLAC: 1-11, 12.
